How to Make an Automated Cobblestone Farm in Minecraft (Beginner-Friendly Guide)

Cobblestone is one of the most used blocks in Minecraft — whether you're building castles, crafting furnaces, or digging tunnels, you’ll always need more. Mining it by hand can get repetitive... but with a cobblestone generator, you can get unlimited cobble automatically!

In this guide, you’ll learn how to make a simple cobblestone farm, and then how to automate it so you can just hold a button (or go AFK) and collect stacks.

⚙️ What Is a Cobblestone Generator?

A cobblestone generator is a setup where water and lava meet. When they do, Minecraft spawns a cobblestone block. If you mine it, another cobblestone forms in the same place — endlessly!

🧱 What You’ll Need (Simple Version)

To make a basic cobblestone generator, you'll need:

  • 1 Lava Bucket

  • 1 Water Bucket

  • 5+ Building Blocks (stone, dirt, etc.)

  • Pickaxe (any kind)

Optional (for automation):

  • Piston

  • Observer

  • Redstone

  • Hopper

  • Chest

🏗️ How to Build a Basic Cobblestone Generator

Step 1: Dig the Channel

Dig a trench like this:

  • Dig 5 blocks long.

  • Make the second block one level deeper.

Step 2: Place the Water

Place water at one end of the trench. It should flow into the 1-block-deep hole (second block in line).

Step 3: Place the Lava

Place lava at the opposite end. When it touches the flowing water, cobblestone forms in the middle.

Important: Make sure water flows into the lava's direction — never let lava flow into the water or it’ll turn into obsidian!

🎮 How to Use It

Stand in front of the cobblestone block and mine it. As soon as you break it, a new one appears. Repeat forever!

You now have an infinite cobblestone supply.

🤖 How to Automate the Cobblestone Farm

Want to take it to the next level? You can automate the mining or pushing of cobblestone using pistons and observers.

Materials (Basic Auto Version):

  • Lava

  • Water

  • Building blocks

  • 1 Observer

  • 1 Piston

  • Redstone dust

  • Optional: Hopper + Chest for collection

Step-by-Step: Auto-Pushing Cobblestone Generator

  1. Set up the basic cobblestone generator (as above).

  2. Place an observer block so it faces the cobblestone (its “face” looks at it).

  3. Behind the observer, add redstone dust.

  4. Place a piston next to the cobblestone, powered by the redstone.

  5. When a new cobblestone is generated, the observer triggers the piston to push it.

  6. The piston can push up to 12 blocks — this creates a cobblestone row.

  7. You can mine the cobble from the end of the row while it keeps growing.

Want to go AFK? Use an auto-clicker or hold down your mouse button with tape or a weight!

💡 Extra Tips

  • Use a hopper + chest under where cobblestone drops to collect it automatically.

  • Enchant your pickaxe with Unbreaking or Efficiency for faster mining.

  • For XP, combine this farm with a stone generator and smelting setup.

🧱 Why Use a Cobblestone Farm?

  • Infinite building blocks

  • No more digging ugly holes in the ground

  • Works great underground, on skyblock, or in the Nether

  • Pairs perfectly with automated smelting or crafting systems

✅ Final Thoughts

A cobblestone farm is one of the easiest and most useful farms in all of Minecraft. Whether you're in early survival, building in Skyblock, or running a massive factory base — it’s a must-have.

Start with the basic version and upgrade it later with pistons and automation. Once it’s set up, you’ll never run out of stone again!
